Greenhouse: The race has begun.

Greenhouse creates artificial climate (you already know that). You can grow whatever (almost!). Greenhouses are extremely capital intensive. Greenhouses can increase the yield by 5x in the same period of time (guaranteed).

Netafim of Israel are the biggest in the world in greenhouse technology. Israelis, it is believed, are the best in greenhouse & irrigation systems. The Netafim (India) website was not working and hence I ended up talking to the Israeli office. Followed it up with four more conversations with as many companies in Israel. While I was on this, I found that Eurofresh (www.eurofreshfarms.com) is the biggest greenhouse farming company in the world. They grow tomatoes as a speciality. Guess how much in a year they grow? 200 million tonnes of tomatoes alone! This translates into four times the entire production of Maharashtra. Do you know, this company filed for bankruptcy last year but in seven months, turned around their entire business? Amazing story! And the best part is, guess the size the of their greenhouse? Before you guess, remember, they are the biggest in the world! OK, here it is: Euro Fresh Farms is the world's biggest greenhouse with JUST three hundred and eighteen acres of greenhouse (sorry to repeat, but 200 million tonnes of tomatoes come out of these 318 acres of greenhouses, i.e. 1.25 million tonnes in every two acres of land!) Man, this is crazy! Unthinkable!!

P.S: Bhoomi Crop is searching for greenhouse technology partners globally now. Our first lot of greenhouses will be close to two hundred acres. if everything goes right. Once this happens, in four years, Bhoomi Crop can be the biggest greenhouse in the world. Amen!

Journey of Bhoomi Crop

Journey of Bhoomi Crop
Bhoomi Crop is the first limited liability organised farming and distribution company in Bengal. Four CXO level friends put this together. We have no formal training in the art and science of farming and everyday, I, Kaushik Mukherji, learn a new lesson at the farm. Illiterate farmers in the villages, the closeby IIT (Kharagpur) are my teachers and supporters. We are extremely bullish on this business opportunity, which is already making a social difference too.
